Law School Launches “Jurists' Lecture Room” Series

On Sept 25, 2019, a lecture series, knows as “SDUFE-Jointide Jurists' Lecture Room”, was officially launched on the university’s Yanshan campus.

The lecture series is planned by SDUFE Law School and supported by its strategic partner, Jointide Law Firm, which is based and famed in Shandong. It aims to enhance the ability of the university’s faculty and staff to conduct legal research, facilitate the development of the discipline of law and improve the cultivation of legal talents.

Before the lecture, Zhao Youchun, the university’s Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, addressed to the audience. He fully recognized the lecture series for its role in promoting the development of the university’s disciplines; thanked Prof. Chen for his arduous efforts in facilitating the planning and launch of the lecture series; expected the university to grasp the chance to achieve the rapid and high-quality development of the discipline of law.

He believed, for legal research, that we should aim at “conceptualization”, start from “question”, cut through “problem”, and focus on “issue”; that we should make breakthroughs in expounding theories instead of normalizing them.

The first lecture was given by Chen Ruihua, a PKU professor, renowned jurist of criminal procedure law in China and laureate of the "Cheung Kong Scholar" award, signaling the official launch of the lecture series. It falls into two parts.

The first part is for the faculty and staff who are engaged in legal education or are interested in legal research. It was attended by faculty and staff from the Law School, lawyers from Jointide Law Firm and other well-known law firms, and teachers from Jinan-based universities.

The second part is for law students and other students who are immensely interested in law. It was attended by teachers and students from our university and other Jinan-based universities, procurators from Jinan prosecuting authorities, and lawyers from Jointide Law Firm and other famous law firms.

In this part, Prof. Chen, with the topic of “Development of and Reflection on the Criminal Defense System”, sorted out and reflected on the history and reality of and the achievements and problems of China’s criminal defense system from six aspects, offering an academic feast to all the audience.

These aspects are: the development from a single defense of innocence to a diversified defense, the historic change in the identity of defense lawyers, the full expansion for lawyers’ development space, the formation of the two modes of legal aid, the transformation from lawyer defense to effective defense, and the emergence of the prevention and relief of professional risk.

This event has received desirable academic and social effects.
